Buduruwagala is home to a fascinating set of ancient rock carvings in a forested area near Wellawaya in southern Sri Lanka. The name means "the rock of Buddha's statues," and the site features seven massive carvings etched into a vertical rock face, the tallest of which is over 50 feet. These statues are believed to date back to the 9th or 10th century and are linked to Mahayana Buddhist traditions. Buduruwagala is serene, uncrowded, and enveloped by jungle, making it a spiritual and off-the-beaten-path destination.
